Some middle way between WiC and the Wargames games would be cool. But it lacks an actual depth in my opinion. While I in general agree, I just think that WiC has too less units types and ends up in a "call in, get wasted by support ability, call new in" loop. Not sure if the multiplayer is still playable but I remember it being an absolute blast back in the day, with this weird class system in a 4v4 format that made you pick a playstyle and commit to it. I remember playing this game a lot as a kid and being entertained by just playing with the artillery, you get a huge list of different support abilities you can call in and they're all extremely satisfying to watch, with effects that honestly wouldn't be out of place in a modern day game. You control the camera almost like you're an FPS character up in the sky. The camera controls especially in this game are a pleasant surprise. Very cheap on GOG, picked up the complete edition for 15 AUD yesterday. No other RTS really matches the sense of spectacle that this game provides. Gameplay is fun and unique, story is surprisingly competent with some actual emotional moments and well fleshed out characters. Graphics absolutely hold up today, even better than most RTS from that time period. Cold war gone hot scenario, which feels frighteningly relevant with the current situation in Ukraine.
